How to read a roulette payout table

Learning how to read a roulette payout table before you place your first bet shows what each wager returns, what it costs, and where the casino’s advantage sits. The chart lists the odds paid for each betting area, while the felt or digital layout shows where the chip goes.

The same labels appear across online and land-based games, but the mathematics changes with the wheel. A European wheel has one zero, an American wheel has two zeros, and French versions may include special even-money rules. These differences matter even when every game displays identical-looking bets.

Payouts show returns, not probabilities

Before betting, open the paytable, rules or help icon on an online game. At a physical table, read the chart printed on the betting layout. Check whether it shows winnings alone or the total returned with the stake.

A straight-up bet on one number pays 35:1. With an AU$10 stake, the winnings are AU$350, and returning the original stake brings the total received to AU$360. The payout is the profit, not the total paid back to you.

Other entries include 1:1 for red, black, odd, even, high and low; 2:1 for a dozen or column; 5:1 for six numbers; 11:1 for a street; and 17:1 for a split or corner. Always confirm whether the displayed figure includes the stake, since terminology can vary.

Odds reveal the house edge

Payouts describe a successful result, while odds describe how likely that result is. A straight-up number wins on 1 of 37 pockets on a European wheel, but only 1 of 38 on an American wheel. The corresponding theoretical return to player is 97.30% for European and 94.74% for American games.

The house edge is the casino’s expected percentage of each wager. On most bets, it is 2.70% on a single-zero European wheel and 5.26% on a double-zero American wheel. Across AU$50 of total stakes, the expected loss is AU$1.35 or AU$2.63 respectively; these are mathematical averages, not predictions for one session.

Compare the wheel formats

European, American and French wheels present different chances behind the same payout chart. The key details are:

Wheel Number of pockets Straight-up chance House edge on most bets
European single zero 37 1 in 37 (2.70%) 2.70%
American double zero 38 1 in 38 (2.63%) 5.26%
French single zero 37 1 in 37 (2.70%) 2.70%, or 1.35% on qualifying even-money bets under La Partage or En Prison

A qualifying French game can offer a better result on an even-money bet when zero lands: La Partage returns half the stake, while En Prison sets the wager aside for the next spin. Those rules apply only to specified bets, so the full rules still matter.

Minimum and maximum stakes matter

The limits printed beside the game govern what you can actually wager. A minimum of AU$2 may be workable within an AU$20 entertainment budget, while a maximum can prevent a large stake on a particular number. Some tables also set lower caps on straight-up bets than on even-money wagers.

A practical resource on bankroll-friendly roulette games explains how game minimums, maximums and volatility affect the number of rounds a bankroll can cover. Many Australian players set their budget in Australian dollars, so checking that the balance and stakes are both denominated in AUD helps avoid conversion surprises.

Promotions have separate conditions

A welcome offer does not change the payout odds. Before choosing an offer, review roulette bonuses and promotions for eligible games and expiry dates, then check the wagering requirement, maximum permitted bet and withdrawal conditions.

For example, a 100% deposit match may include money that cannot be withdrawn until the stated turnover is completed. Some operators exclude roulette or restrict it while a bonus is active, so a large headline amount can be less useful than a smaller promotion suited to the games you understand.

Check the operator and local rules

An operator’s legal and licensing guidance should name the company, regulator and jurisdiction, as well as any restrictions on who may play. The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 governs the federal framework, while state and territory laws determine which authorised operators can serve residents; the ACMA also blocks certain prohibited offshore gambling services.

The local market can look familiar without being locally authorised. Players in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane may encounter sites marketed as Australian casinos, and some sports betting platforms include selected casino games in their lobbies. Availability and legality vary by state, so an offshore brand or a familiar sportsbook name is not proof of local authorisation.

Keep the first session controlled

A measured first session combines a clearly understood wager with a fixed spending limit and a time boundary. European and qualifying French games offer more favourable probabilities than the standard American layout, while even-money bets are simpler to track than combinations, although they still carry a house advantage.

The chart is a map of returns and probabilities, not a forecast. Roulette spins are independent, so a run of red, a losing streak or a previous loss does not alter the next spin’s chances; no payout schedule can turn those odds into a certainty.
